Dear Macintosh User:
I FEEL HELPLESS WITHOUT SQUARE ONE ON MY MACINTOSH
I really do. The funny thing is, the first time I used Square One, I didn’t much like it. Using an icon-palette to get at my programs instead of clicking around my hard drive felt different, and a little uncomfortable.
The more I used it, the more I appreciated it. I just dragged my mouse to the corner and all my programs appeared in front of me in a handy, eye-pleasing, icon-palette. I never realized how much time I was wasting hunting through my hard drive.
One day , I had to test some new software on a friend’s Macintosh. Working without it made me realize how much I depended on it—I felt helpless without Square One!
Because of Square One, I expected all my programs to be right in front of me, all the time. It felt so easy and natural that I expected Square One to be on every Macintosh I used.
I was hooked. That day, I called the programmer of Square One and bought the rights to it.
That was almost three years ago. Since then, over 40,000 people discovered the sheer pleasure of using Square One. People like these:
“I love the options, I love the ease of use and most of all the versatility of Square One. This program is awesome. I take my hat off to you…” Ron Waddell, Irvine
“I’ve died and gone to heaven. This program is A++.” David G. Parker, Greenville
There is only one way to find out if Square One is right for you; try it out.
Use it for four weeks (that’s how long it takes to get hooked). After that, if you don’t agree that Square One is an “absolutely-can’t-live-without” part of your Macintosh, I promise to give you a full, prompt and no-hassle refund.
Very truly yours,
Gary Gonzalez

Launching Square One:
To use Square One you must launch it. There are several ways to launch Square One, either:
* Double-click on the Square One™ 2.0 Demo icon on your hard drive.
* Select Launch Square One from the Square One menu (next to the Balloon Help menu).
* Launch Square One with a Hot Key.
* The first time you launch Square One, you will be given the option to create and place an alias to Square One inside the Startup Items folder within the System Folder. This alias will launch Square One every time you start your Macintosh. Click Yes if you want Square One to launch every time you start your Macintosh. Note: It is recommended that you let Square One create the alias. This is the best way to get the maximum value from Square One.
What is a Palette?:
The palette is the heart of Square One. A Square One palette contains references to files. It is a document created by the Square One application and saved on your hard drive. Applications, folders and documents all appear as icons in your palette, and look exactly the same as they do on the Macintosh desktop. The palette makes it easy to have all the files you use regularly in a single window.
* Once files are installed in a palette, you can double-click on them to launch; just like the Macintosh Finder. You can also access folders, open documents and quit applications, among other things.
* Square One allows you to keep as many palettes open as you desire. This way you can create custom palettes for many different needs.
Creating a New Palette:
To start using Square One you will first need to create a palette. To create a new palette:
1. Launch Square One.
2. Choose New (cmd-N) from the File menu. Choose the folder you want to save the palette in, type in a name for the new palette (Square One Palette is filled in by default), and then click Save.
3. After saving, you will see a dialog, which allows you to choose special folders to add to the Palette. The System, Control Panels, and Apple Menu Items Folders are selected by default. You can select or deselect any of the folders in the dialog by clicking on them. Selected folders will be highlighted. Once you have chosen which folders to add to your palette click OK & Find.
4. Square One will search your hard disk and present a dialog with a list of all the applications on your hard drive. If you have more than one drive (or an inserted floppy disk) you will see a dialog that allows you to choose the drive/volume to search. Just click on the drive you wish to search for applications.
5. Select the applications you want to install in the palette. Either:
* Click just to the left of the application's name.
* Click once on the application's name and click the Select button.
* Double-click on the application's name.
* Click and drag just left of the applications to select multiple applications.
* Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight an application and then use the left arrow key to check or the right arrow key to uncheck the application.
* Use the same methods above to deselect an application.
Check marks will appear to the left of the selected applications.
6. Click OK when you are finished selecting applications.
Your new palette will display all the selected applications' icons in cells of the palette window.
The Active Applications Palette will also appear. It displays all running applications, and you can switch to any running application by clicking in this palette.
Using Your New Palette:
There are many ways you can launch applications and open files in your palette. The Square One palette can be used like a Finder window; double-click on applications, documents, and folders in the palette to launch or open them just like in the Finder.
* To launch any application in the palette, just double-click on its cell.
* To open a document, double-click on the document in the document list.
* To switch to any running application, click on it in the Active Applications Palette.
* By clicking and holding on a palette item, you will get a pop-up menu of options for launching that item and for opening its documents.
* You can also access your palette items by using the Square One menu (next to the Balloon Help menu).
* You can select the palette item and use the Launch menu which has the same options as the pop-up.
Adding Documents:
Document lists are the way Square One organizes documents. Each application installed in Square One has a document list associated with it, and each document list can contain permanent documents or recent documents.
* The easiest way to add documents to the document list is to just use your Macintosh. Recent documents will automatically appear as you open and save documents. Recent documents appear in italics in the document list and in the pop-up menus.
There are two ways to manually add documents to the document list.
* The first way is to use the Find Documents menu item under the Setup menu. This will find all documents created by the selected application.
* The second way is to use the Add Documents menu item from the Setup menu. The Add Documents function allows you to add any document that can be opened by the selected application (i.e. Microsoft Word can open any text file).
To find and add documents created by the selected application:
1. Click on the palette item you wish to find documents for.
2. Choose Find Documents (cmd-S) from the Setup menu.
3. Select the documents you want to include in the application's document list. Either:
* Click just to the left of the document's name.
* Click once on the document's name and click the Select button.
* Double-click on the document's name.
* Click and drag just left of the documents to select multiple documents.
* Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight a document and then use the left arrow key to check or the right arrow key to uncheck the highlighted document.
* Use the same methods above to deselect a document.
Check marks will appear to the left of the selected documents.
4. Click OK when you are done selecting documents.
Your palette will now display all the selected documents in the document list of the palette window.
To add documents that can be opened by the selected application:
1. Select the palette item you want to install documents for.
2. Choose Add Documents (cmd-H) from the Setup menu. You will see a file dialog that allows you to select multiple documents.
3. Select the document.
* Click the Add button. Added documents will be listed in the lower scroll box.
* To remove an added document, select it in the bottom list and click the Remove button.
4. Click OK when you are finished selecting documents.
Your palette will appear with all the selected documents in the document list of the palette window.
